Task 1 (in prep for Oct 15  Thurs Lit Assessment) - Paragraph Structure & Transition Words: NOTES FOR STUDENTS TO TAKE - there will be a quiz on this information - TBD - Oct 9 FYI. Friday. Mini. 

  • Topic Sentences: A strong topic sentence introduces the main idea of the paragraph, clearly stating what the paragraph will be about.
  • Body Paragraph Transitions: Transitions help connect ideas, ensuring the writing flows logically. (2-3 examples).
  • Conclusion Transitions: Conclusion should restate the main point and tie everything together while guiding the reader to a final thought.
  • NOTES:
  • Different types of transition words and phrases:
    • For Adding Information: furthermore, additionally, also
    • For Contrast: however, on the other hand, nevertheless
    • For Example: for instance, for example, such as
    • For Cause and Effect: therefore, as a result, consequently
    • For Summarizing: in conclusion, overall, to sum up

Review Questions: Have students write their answers on their own - then discuss as a class - students to keep their work.

What does NIMBY stand for?

What animal is the conservation group worried about in the selected Vail employee housing development area? 

What are some negative consequences already being seen in the town regarding a lack of affordable housing?

What are the local 'wealthy' residents worried about re: the development - animal population OR  . . .? 

Vail Summary - since the filming - 2023

  • The Outcome: After years of legal battling, the Town of Vail voted to condemn the property in 2023, paying $17.5 million to acquire the land from Vail Resorts to prevent the development.
  • Resulting Action: The land is now designated to be preserved as a wildlife habitat, while Vail Resorts announced it would focus on re-investing the funds into other employee housing projects
